Sara Hargaden - Alioui's profile

During my residential in the Bidston Observatory Artist Research Centre I sketched and photographed architectural textures and forms - linear features really catching my eye. I was fascinated by the tunnel that circumnavigated the Observatory and inspired by sculpture, developed maquettes for a structure that people could crawl that would conjure up the sensations of discomfort and darkness that I experienced in the tunnel.

A Heritage Project explored my Irish and Moroccan heritage. An Aran Jumper knitted became the inspiration for copper work and colour work on Vilene was developed into slipper forms. I enjoyed the demands of the prototyping process.

Pattern research into the work of Althea McNish and Tibor Reich inspired me to look at nature and develop my own patterns using Adobe Photoshop. I experimented with the different viscosities of paint and ink onto both paper and taffeta, overlaying designs as well as combining print with laser cut shapes. I enjoyed developing this work into ideas for wearable and domestic textiles, considering the way that the decoration changed when draped as a form.

My brief on Biomimicry Architecture was focused on creating my own temporary structure. My interest in homeless architecture - refugee and displacement camps led me to consider shell structures in combination with the natural structures found in coral reefs and cells under the microscope.
